Elections / Voting Information

General Information:
National, state, and county general elections are held in November of even-numbered years.  National, state, and county primaries are held in August of even-numbered years.  The school district holds elections in November of odd-numbered years.  

Become a Candidate:
Newport will have the following elected offices on the ballot in 2024:
         (1) Mayor Seat: 4-year term
         (2) Council Seats: 4-year terms
Candidate Filing Period:  July 30, 2024 - August 13, 2024

2024 Elections:
March 5, 2024:  Presidential Nomination Primary (PNP)
August 13, 2024:  Primary Election (Absentee Voting Begins June 28, 2024)
November 5, 2024:  General Election (Absentee Voting Begins September 20, 2024)

You Can Vote if You Meet These requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age on Election Day
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must have been a Minnesota resident for at least 20 days before Election Day
  • Must not be currently incarcerated for a conviction of a felony offense.
  • Must not be under a court-ordered guardianship where the court has revoked your voting rights
  • Must not be ruled legally incompetent by a court of law

Voter Registration
Before you can vote, you must register.  You must also update your registration if you have moved, changed your name, or have not voted in the past four years.

Election Judges:
Election Judges are hired through Washington County.
